You Can Afford to Play Music Buy Used Instruments

Used music gear

Are some of your most common thoughts, “Where can I spend all of my money at once?” or “I want to spend my paychecks MORE quickly!”

No? Are you thinking more along the lines of, “Where did my paycheck go?”

Then you may want to reconsider purchasing musical instruments new. The decision to buy used musical instruments or used musical equipment is smart.

In fact, after a quick Google search, I am shocked my parents let me play the clarinet in high school. Now that I know some of the prices out there, I will be asking my future children, “How about chorus, honey?”

Used musical instrument prices, however, can be much more reasonable. And purchasing and playing used music instruments has a lot of benefits.

1. Brain Power

Sadly the Mozart Effect, which is literally a term used to describe listening to Mozart on the off chance that it makes you smarter, has been debunked as a myth.

Playing a musical instrument, however, has been proven to increase brain activity and may have a direct impact on intelligence. According to a study in the journal Psychology of Music, children who grow up playing instruments have better reading and math skills than their peers. Another study showed an increase in brain activity among senior citizens who regularly played musical instruments.

2. Listening skills

I have a friend who plays the drums, guitar, and piano. He is something of a music aficionado and he will, at the most random times, brightly announce, “This song is in E flat.”

I still cannot figure out how he knows, but it is clear that the decision to buy used musical instruments and play them can improve your listening skills. Playing an instrument requires people to pick out wrong notes, tune instruments, and play harmoniously in a group setting. All of these things sharpen and refine listening skills.

3. An Increased Sense of Culture

Music reflects culture. Or, if you prefer, culture reflects music. Either way, playing music will give you a better understanding about the history and time period when it was composed.

There are many other benefits to playing instruments. Eric Clapton continues to make the decision to buy used musical instruments because, to him, that means someone thought those instruments were worth playing.

  1. Buying used instruments is super smart. My friend owns five guitars and, no offense to him, he would never have been able to afford that if they were full price. He just bought a twelve string guitar for 120 bucks. Made me jealous.
